Why is a Garage Sale Permit required? After complaints were received about single-family residences having excessive garage sales, a permit process was implemented.
How to get a permit
What does the Garage Sale Permit do? Article VI, “Garage and Other Sales,” explains the definition of garage sales and yard sales. It requires a simple permit, which is free and can be obtained on the Village’s permitting portal MGO. The permit limits the number of garage sales at a residence to two times a year for no more than two consecutive days and the hours from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Who does it affect? The regulations affect homeowners in residential areas.
How to comply: Homeowners who wish to hold a garage or yard sale can apply for a free permit online here. Permits can be issued Monday through Friday within 24 business hours. Garage sales cannot be held for more than two consecutive days and can only be operated between the hours of 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., no more than two times during a year.
What about signage? One two (2) feet by three (3) feet sign is permitted on the premises to direct the public to the garage sale. The sign shall be removed at the end of the last day on which the sale is held and placed no sooner than 24 hours prior to the date of the sale.
When is the latest I can submit a permit before the weekend? In order for garage sale permits to be approved on time over the weekend, homeowners shall submit the completed application to the permit portal before noon on Friday. If a permit is received any time after or online, the garage sale may not be approved until the next business day.

How will garage sale permitting be enforced? Code enforcement officials will work with residents to educate and inform first, issuing warnings if necessary. Repeat offenders may receive a Notice of Violation, and fees will increase if repeated violations or non-compliances are found.

- No more than two permitted garage sales are allowed at the same residence each year.
