Pirate ShipThe North Palm Beach Library is proud to announce its third annual haunted house. This year, the library is combining with Parks and Recreation to execute a full day of fun with the Halloween Festival: The Flying Dutchman, on Saturday, Oct. 29th. Anchorage Park with transform into a spooktacular experience for visitors to come and watch the Flying Dutchman come to life before their eyes. Complete with pirates, sirens, and plenty of watery graves.

The day will offer hay rides, a haunted trail (recommended for ages 8+), food, music, a petting zoo, and even more carnival games than last year. Additionally, we will be offering contests for guests. Guests can bring jack o' lanterns for our Pumpkin Carving Contest, come dressed up in their favorite costumes for a Costume Contest, and end the evening with a Pie Eating Contest. Lil' Pirate Treasure Hunt: 

Don't miss our treasure hunt for your lil' pirate! Our Treasure Hunt is for younger children to hunt for treasure around the playground. The Treasure Hunt starts at 4:30 p.m. and ends when all the treasure is found! Wristbands must be purchased ahead of time. Under three is free. The Treasure Hunt is recommended for up to 7 years old.

CONTESTS

This year, our Halloween Festival is offering a Costume Contest, a Jack o' Lantern Contest, and a Pie Eating Contest. Pre-registration is required for the Pie Eating Contest. See below for details of each contest.

Costume Contest

  • Costume Contest entries are available from 4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. at the Volleyball Courts beside the playground.
  • Judging will take place from 5:30 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
  • Winners will be announced at the DJ staging area starting at 6:00 p.m. along with the Pumpkin Carving Contest Winners.
  • Categories are Scariest, Funniest, Best DIY, Judge's Pick, and Mayor's Pick
  • Prizes include a trophy for each winner and an additional prize for Judge's Pick and Mayor's Pick .

Costume Contest Rules

  • Costumes from all genres of fandom and non-cosplay Halloween costumes are acceptable. Handmade and self-constructed costumes are highly encouraged but not necessary.
  • Please have any makeup or costuming done before the event.
  • All costumes must be family-friendly and appropriate for all ages. Any nudity or illusion is prohibited. 
  • No open carry of firearms. Costume weapons must be fake.
  • For safety reasons, the following props are not allowed:
    • Live animals (with the exception of service animals).
    • Substances that might damage or stain facilities or other costumes and participants.
    • Aerosol sprays.
    • Projectiles of any kind. Don’t throw anything.
    • Flames, pyrotechnics or explosives of any kind.
    • Metal bags, large wrenches or shovels.
  • There are no entry fees for this contest.
  • Judges will not know any entry information including the participant’s name.
  • Decisions by the judges are final. Any judging sheets are the property of the festival and shall not be released.
  • By entering into the contest, contestants give the Village of NPB authorization to use photos of the contestants and names of the contestants/assistants for use on its website, social media and through media outlets.

Costume Contest


Pumpkin Carving Contest

Jack o LanternParticipants bring their carved pumpkin to the Anchorage Park building lobby before 3:30 p.m., as pumpkins will need time to be judged during the event. A name and phone number must be collected upon jack o' lantern entry. Jack o' Lanterns will be placed on tables for display for the public to judge.

  • Judging starts at 5:30 p.m.
  • Winners will be announced at the DJ staging area starting at 6:00 p.m. along with the Costume Contest Winners.
  • Categories are Scariest, Funniest, Most Original, Public's Choice, and Mayor's Pick.
  • Prizes include a trophy for each winner and an additional prize for Public's Pick and Mayor's Pick.

Pumpkin Carving Contest Rules

  • Pumpkins entered into the contest must be carved. Painting and accessories may be added to accent the carving design. Any pumpkin that is not carved will be disqualified from the contest.
  • Entries into the contest should be carved prior to the event.
  • Contestant shall provide their own non-flame, battery-powered light source within each pumpkin entry. 
  • Registration will take place during festival setup on Saturday, Oct. 29th, between 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Anchorage Park
  • Upon registration, pumpkins will be given an entry number for judging.
  •  There are no entry fees for this contest.
  • Judges will not know any entry information including the carver’s name.
  • Decisions by the judges are final. Any judging sheets are the property of the festival and shall not be released.
  • By entering into the contest, contestants give the Village of NPB authorization to use photos of the pumpkin/contestants and names of the contestants/assistants for use on its website, social media and through media outlets.
  • Contestants must pick up their pumpkins by the closing of the festival. Any pumpkins remaining after the closing of the festival will be discarded.
  • Although the festival will do everything possible to ensure the pumpkins are safe during the festival, the festival, its board, sponsors nor parent organization shall be held liable for any pumpkins that may be damaged, lost or stolen during the duration. 

Pie Eating Contest

Pre-Registration Here

Pre-registration required, limited spots available (30). Each contestant gets 4 mini pumpkin pies. Whoever eats through the four pies first wins!

  • Competing for 1st, 2nd, 3rd and Messiest Eater. 
  • Prizes include a trophy and an additional prize for 1st Place.
  • Participants check-in at the Pie Eating Contest Area beside the DJ booth between 6:00 p.m. to 6:10 p.m.

Pumpkin Pie

Pie Eating Contest Rules

  • Hands are not to be used during the contest to consume the pie. Contestants can use their hands to drink water.
  • By participating, contestants acknowledge they are not allergic to tree nuts or peanuts. 
  • Contestants must be over the age of 16 to participate. A completed liability waiver must be on file for each contestant. Participants under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian sign a liability waiver to participate.
  • There are no entry fees for this contest.
  • Judges will not know any entry information including the eater’s name.
  • Decisions by the judges are final. Any judging sheets are the property of the festival and shall not be released.
  • By entering into the contest, contestants give the Village of NPB authorization to use photos of the contestants and names of the contestants for use on its website, social media and through media outlets.
